Ranking of the world's top universities 2023

The 2023 edition of the world university ranking, often referred to as the Shanghai List, was recently published. Of the 1,000 universities listed, 9 were from Poland. The winner of the ranking was Harvard University, with Warsaw University and Jagiellonian University as the best ranked universities in Poland.

Ranking methodology

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) university ranking has been compiled since 2003. ARWU considers any university that has Nobel Prize winners, Fields medalists, highly cited scientists or articles published in Nature or Science. In addition, universities with a significant number of articles indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also included. In total, more than 2,500 universities were ranked, and the top 1,000 were published.
The ranking ranks universities based on various indicators, such as the number of Nobel Prize or Fields Medal winners among alumni and staff, the number of publications in Nature and Science, and the number of most frequently cited scientists. The ranking also takes into account achievements relative to the size of the university. The scores for each indicator are weighted, as shown below, to arrive at a final overall score for the institution. The highest-scoring institution receives a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the highest score. Specific rankings are given only for the top 100 universities, the others are grouped together.

Analysis of results

Harvard University (USA) maintained its leading position. The next places, like last year, were taken by Stanford University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and University of Cambridge (UK). Among the top ten, as many as eight universities were from the US and two from the UK. The first university outside the US and UK, Paris-Saclay University, ranked 15th. The top Asian university, Tsinghua University from China, was ranked 22nd.

Polish universities in the ranking

Warsaw University and Jagiellonian University ranked in the 401-500 range, maintaining their positions from last year. The AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow dropped in the results to the 801-900 range. The Medical University of Wroclaw was also ranked in the ninth hundred. The remaining five universities, i.e. Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Gdansk University of Technology, Warsaw Medical University, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and Warsaw University of Technology, were classified in the last, tenth hundred.
